Story
Help Northamptonshire Community Foundation tackle food poverty on our doorstep by donating to our Family Food Aid Fund. The urgent need to tackle food poverty goes on with the cost of living crisis.
As of January 2024, a staggering 15% of households in the UK, comprising 8 million adults and 3 million children, experienced food insecurity. The consequences of this crisis are stark, with 60% of food-insecure households reporting reduced purchases of fruits and 44% purchasing fewer vegetables. Children, in particular, bear the brunt of rising food poverty, as evidenced by the alarming statistics indicating that 6% of children in the UK used food banks in 2021/22. Estimates from the Food Foundation revealed that in January 2024, 24% of households with children were grappling with food insecurity.
The impact of food insecurity on educational attainment is equally concerning, with government data revealing that pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM) typically underperform in GCSEs compared to their peers. This cycle of deprivation perpetuates the cycle of poverty, hindering the future prospects of countless young people.
In response to this urgent need, Northamptonshire Community Foundation is launching the Family Food Aid Appeal. This appeal aims to provide essential support to charities and organisations within Northamptonshire, working tirelessly to address food insecurity in deprived communities across our county. By donating to this campaign, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that vulnerable families and children have access to nutritious food and vital support services.
Your generous contribution will enable us to distribute grants to local charities who specialise in food aid, empowering them to expand their reach and impact within our communities. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.
We invite you to join us in our mission to combat food poverty and create a brighter future for individuals and families in Northamptonshire. Your support, no matter the size, will make a tangible difference and bring hope to those facing the harsh realities of food insecurity.
