Story
The Falmouth Lifeboat Station was established by the RNLI in 1867. Its first lifeboat, City of Gloucester, a 33ft rowing lifeboat served from 1867 to 1887. The lifeboats were housed in a boathouse and slipway in Falmouth Docks until 1918 when the expansion of the Docks meant that all future lifeboats were kept afloat in the harbour, with a station based at Custom House Quay until 1994. The stations first motor lifeboat was The Brothers, a 45ft Watson Motor Lifeboat which served from 1931 to 1934.
Various types of Inshore Lifeboats were trialled in the 1960’s and 1970’s but it was not until April 1980 that the station officially received its first Inshore Lifeboat to work alongside the All Weather Lifeboat. In 1994 the station moved to its current location adjacent to docks near County Wharf, the Atlantic Class Inshore Lifeboat being housed in the station and launched down a slipway, while the Severn Class All Weather Lifeboat is moored alongside its pontoon berth.
Today the station is served by the Serven Class all weather lifeboat Richard Cox Scott (17-29) and the Atlantic 85 class inshore lifeboat Robina Nixon Chard (B-916).
Since the station was established in 1867 there have been eleven gallantry medals awarded, two gold, five silver and four bronze the last being awarded in 2005.
The volunteer lifeboat crew provide a 24-hour search and rescue service 365 days a year along the South Cornwall Coastline, but none of this would be possible without the support of the public and their donations. It costs in the region of £250k a year to run and maintain the service in Falmouth, all of which comes from the generous donations of the public.
