Story
In March 2015, along with a team of 13 others, Rob undertook an extreme alpine challenge, Everest in the Alps. The team ascended 8,848 metres - equivalent to the height of the world's largest mountain - on skis, raising an incredible £3m for The Brain Tumour Charity.
Rob was inspired to undertake this challenge by his son Toby, who was diagnosed with a low grade brain tumour at the age of five. Despite surgery and gruelling chemotherapy, the position of the tumour on Toby's brain stem means that it cannot be fully removed.
Everest In The Alps 2015 enabled The Brain Tumour Charity to invest £5m in to The Everest Centre for Research into Paediatric Low Grade Brain Tumours, the largest single investment globally in to low grade paediatric brain tumours. It brings together an international, multi-disciplinary team of leading experts, collaborating across Europe and the USA.
The amazing teams in 2018 and 2019 added to this by raising a brilliant £1.5m.
We are close to raising the original target of £5m needed for the Centre to become established, and the efforts of the 2020 Everest in the Alps team will bring us even closer to this. Research is well underway and we are making great progress. However we need to provide surety of funding for the future to maintain the momentum of this vital programme of work and secure the fantastic team we have in place. We are now entering our second fundraising phase and aim to raise another £5m over the next 5 years. There is a no time to waste, we need to ensure we can accelerate the work required to improve the lives of thousands of children living with a brain tumour as soon as possible. A cure can't wait.
