EAU Water Projects for Refugees in Uganda:
At Equal Aqua, our mission is to provide access to safe and sustainable water for rural communities in Uganda. Specifically, we aim to support those groups, who are more disproportionately affected by WASH inequality, such as women, children and refugees.
Water Crisis in Bunambuyte Resettlement Camp:
In 2018, as a result of devastating mudslides, the Government of Uganda launched a resettlement programme for the families affected by these extreme climate events across Elgon region. So far, more than 250 households (at least 2,000 people) have resettled in Bunambuyte. However, this camp is facing critical conditions, because the water infrastructure is failing, leading to water shortages.
Specifically, the collection of water is becoming increasingly unreliable, meaning that residents often resort to souring water from contaminated streams and rivers, with limited application of purification methods. This is having devastating impacts on health, education and livelihoods, especially for women and girls, who usually carry the burden of water collection and treatment, and have poorer access to treatment for water-borne diseases and other related health issues.
Your help will enable us to address the water crisis in Bunambuyte by:
-providing rainwater harvesting tanks for 202 households. This entails the installation of conventional (moulded reinforced plastic) 5,000-litre tanks for each household, including the construction of a stable foundation and robust guttering system.
-distributing water filters for Bunambutye Primary School and Health Centre. Our natural, ceramic water filters have a low environmental impact in production and can last upwards of three years with proper maintenance and use.
