Story

Residents like Rose

Rose was one of the first care home residents we supported when Embracing Age began in 2014.

Rose was a frail, unassuming lady who wanted more than anything to visit the beautiful park her room overlooked. She had bought a wheelchair hoping someone would take her, but that hadn't happened yet.

We matched her to a trained volunteer befriender who also loved nature to take her on trips out into the park.

The joy and wonder on Rose's face when she experienced being in nature again was priceless.

Research shows older people in care homes are twice as likely to feel severely lonely as older people living in the community. People mistakenly assume that because they're with others all their social needs are being met. As one resident told us:

You can be alone in a crowd, you really can".

Another resident said:

I haven't had a visitor for 2 years."

You can hear more about Rose and other residents' stories in this video.

The need is immense but it doesn’t take much to make a big difference.

How You Can Bring Change

Embracing Age recruits and trains volunteers to spend quality time with individual care home residents, combatting loneliness and building friendship doing things that resident enjoys, and bringing a sense of connection through other community links such as handmade cards and craft gifts, initiatives with children's groups and gardening projects.

By supporting our Big 10 Challenge, you'll raise vital funds to make a big difference to hundreds more care home residents and help them know they have not been forgotten, but feel valued, connected and full of hope.

In the words of a 90 year old resident, her Embracing Age volunteer

Absolutely transformed my life!"
