Story

Last year Dundee Bairns provided over 650 children in over 350 families across Dundee City with food hampers and vouchers which helped to support them over the school Christmas holiday period.

These families were identified by school workers as those facing food insecurity in particular and who may struggle to get by at a time where the pressure of Christmas and providing for children is traditionally at it's highest.

Some feedback from school workers delivering our provision to the families they have referred:

"Thank you so much - it feels good to be able to leave them with something. I know this is going to be a rough couple of weeks for them"

"Mum had a wee moment when I handed over the vouchers. There were tears in my eyes too. It means so much, thank you."

"The kids were watching me carry the hamper to the door - they were so excited. It was just a relief for the grandad, as he has the kids over the holidays and I think he was worried"

Christmas is historically an especially difficult time for many families facing poverty, and this year the stress and pressure for many is compounded further by steeply rising fuel costs, cuts to Universal Credit, rising unemployment and the heavily increased cost of living.

This year Dundee Bairns has partnered up again with the amazing staff team at The Apex Hotel in Dundee, who are making up food hampers for us to distribute.

We are also very lucky to have the support of Smiths Interconnect, TSB, Dryburgh Athletic, Brightsolid, staff at Woodlea Children's Centre, DCA, Scott Brothers to help us make our support more than basic food provision.

This year we are also providing art bags made up by the team at Dundee Contemporary Arts, as well as linking up support from the Courier's Tokens for Toys campaign, to help us to add board games to our packs so that families have some activities that they can do together.

Reasons for referral are wide and varied - some are simply struggling to make ends meet, others are facing unimaginable circumstances that no bairn should ever be in.

This is why we hope to lighten the load for families through what can be a very difficult time for too many.

Help us to help Dundee's Bairns this Christmas.

Many low-income families struggle to provide meals during the school holidays. This is especially prevalent in Dundee City where over 1/3 of children are living in poverty. We support projects that are in areas of high multiple deprivation by reaching the most vulnerable children and providing them with a nutritious meal, thus reducing pressure on parents to provide food and boost community cohesion. Dundee Bairns’ was formed in 2016 by David Dorward, former Chief Executive of Dundee City Council. In October 2015 while attending the annual Rank Foundation Conference, David heard Lindsay Graham speak about her research into holiday hunger while being a Winston Church Fellow. Holiday hunger is a symptom of child poverty and in Dundee over 8000 children live below the poverty line. David wanted to ensure that Dundee children would be well nourished and ready to learn. Our core commitment is to reduce the effects of poverty for children in Dundee by trying to tackle the issue of “Holiday Hunger” during the 10 weeks of the school holidays. We support community projects around Dundee that provide activity clubs for children by supplying free lunches/ breakfasts to the clubs, ensuring that the children will receive nutritious and healthy meals. With the help of many volunteers, Tay Cuisine, schools, holiday projects and charitable funding, Dundee Bairns has delivered over 100,000 meals to children in the City of Dundee in just over 2 years.
