Speech and Language UK

DLD Awareness Day

Darcie is one of the 2 in 30 children living with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), a lifelong condition that most people don’t know about. DLD affects every aspect of a child’s life, including how they form friendships and interact with others.

Story

At school, Darcie feels isolated and lonely, unable to keep up with her peers. There is no specialist support at her school available to her and she struggles to understand her teacher. Darcie’s parents are also still learning how best to support her but they are finding it difficult to get guidance and support from professionals.

She needs more help than is available to her. And she’s not the only one.

We put pressure on politicians to prioritise support for children with speech and language challenges, including DLD. We also campaign to raise awareness about what it’s really like to be a child like Darcie, facing challenges with talking and understanding words.

Donate today and make sure all children and their families receive the support they need before it’s too late.
