Story
Diva Salon Spa is passionate about ensuring that everyone, everywhere has their human rights to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) realized. That's why each year, Diva Salon Spa comes together to support WaterAid Canada during Earth Month
This year, we want to share the incredible story of the Napacala Health Clinic in the Cuamba District of Mozambique where WaterAid is just beginning the life changing work of establishing WASH access for patients and staff.
With only two small rooms, the Napacala Health Clinic receives patients from 16 communities, some of which are more than 40km away. The clinic is always busy, with patients lining up hours before the clinic opens, and being seen long after the clinic is closed. Treatments range from malaria pills and vaccinations to wound dressings and post-natal maternal and infant care, with an average of 70 births per month.
The small team of healthcare professionals at the Napacala Health Clinic work all week with little rest, going above and beyond what's required. Most of them are not from the community, but their commitment to it is steadfast. Despite the long hours, limited resources, and no running water, they perform their duties with diligence and pride. But all that hard work and diligence is still not enough to safely treat patients.
It doesn't matter how much training you have, how many hours you work, or the effort you put in. When the only choice you have is dirty water, every effort to heal risks bringing harm.
This story isn't unique. It isn't right, but with your support, it can change. WaterAid has more than 40 years of experience turning situations like these around and we'll do it again in Napacala and many other communities just like it.
