Diarko's Story
"Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I'm running the Derby 10K to help Upbeat Communities.
Before Upbeat I was not happy – I was sad. But coming to Upbeat, I met the Upbeat staff and they helped me in the English class, they helped me to apply for college and to get the help I needed from the doctor.
My favourite thing is meeting new people and playing games. Upbeat helped me with everything. I am so happy. People were very kind to me.
I came to the UK from the Middle East. I was a sound engineer in my home country, for TV programmes there. I enjoyed mixing the music, but I have always loved classical and pop music. I like to listen to music, and I also play the piano, clarinet and guitar.
Music is my life. When I listen to music, my heart is relaxed. I enjoy playing music with others – it’s a great way to connect with others.
I want to run the Derby 10K because I like to run; I like to walk; I like to be always moving. It’s relaxing for me.
Soon, I will start volunteering at Upbeat because I like to work. I like to keep active and to keep busy. I like this opportunity to help other people who come to Upbeat Communities.
I am grateful for any donation you can make to my page. Thank you so much."
Joseph's Story
"Upbeat Communities is a place of hope and support. They welcome me with a smile and a helping hand. It’s a place where I can make a network, connect with the community, and overcome the culture shock.
In my first one or two weeks in the UK, Upbeat helped me to feel settled. Everybody there understands the do’s and don’ts in the UK and it’s helpful. I like the organised and welcoming atmosphere.
I used to volunteer on Mondays and discuss my background in Biotechnology with another volunteer, who used to be a doctor. I told her I was planning to study in university and the next day she came with a written recommendation for me to apply to the Nottingham Trent University. So I had a go and I got an offer to study MSc. in Biomedical Science! My tutor at Upbeat has also been helping me prepare. Upbeat has been helping me with everything.
Last year, I took part in the 10K but since then, I have received my refugee status! I am looking forward to a better future here in the UK. I am taking steps to settle here, with the help of Upbeat Communities.
Upbeat Communities was a turning point for me in the UK. I learned the art of professionalism—this will help me for my future. That’s why I’m raising money for Upbeat this year.
And I want to try and beat last year’s PB if I can!
Thank you very much for visiting my page and supporting Upbeat Communities.”
