By raising money this D-Day, you will be honouring Veterans like 98-year-old Albert Lamond. On June 6th 1944, Albert watched from the sea as the battle raged on the beaches of Normandy – an event which marked the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation.
I was on the bridge throughout and had no cover to defend myself. I will never forget the horrors that I witnessed there. We could see all the men trying to get ashore, not knowing what was waiting for them. All we could do was watch and hope to defend as many of them as we could. We all understood the importance of what we were doing and why we had to do it. But this didn’t make it any better.
I received several medals for my years of service. Among them was the Légion d’honneur by the French government, a tribute to D-Day Veterans recognising our efforts and sacrifices in securing France’s liberation during WWII. I was also honoured with the Pacific Star, this is awarded for those with operational service in the Pacific between 1941 and 2 September 1945.
A friend and I heard about the Erskine Reid Macewen Activity Centre (ERMAC) and decided to visit. After my first visit, that was me. I couldn’t have found a better place. I then moved into The Erskine Home in 2023. All the staff are wonderful and the work that Erskine does for so many Veterans is amazing.
