CUT & SHARE – I DID IT FOR YOU

Organised by Young Tongues

Clinical Net's “CUT & SHARE ” charity event will take place at Canary Wharf’s One Canada Square in September 2024. Participants can shave their heads or cut significant portions of their hair, with all proceeds supporting cancer support charities.

Story

Young Tongues is a dedicated micro charity that provides vital support to young tongue cancer patients aged 18-64 from around the world. Recognising the unique challenges faced by younger individuals diagnosed with this rare condition, Young Tongues has created a comprehensive support network tailored to their specific needs. Central to this network is a digital peer-to-peer support group, available 24/7, where patients can connect, share experiences, and receive emotional support from others who truly understand their journey.

In addition to the online community, Young Tongues organises monthly virtual meet-ups, offering a safe space for patients to discuss their concerns, share updates, and gain insights from guest speakers. These virtual gatherings are complemented by regular in-person meet-ups in both the UK and USA, fostering a sense of community and allowing members to build meaningful connections beyond the screen.

Understanding the gap in resources tailored to younger patients, Young Tongues actively involves patients in the creation of age-appropriate materials designed to assist others navigating tongue cancer. These resources fill a critical need, as most clinical information is geared toward elderly patients and may not address the unique challenges younger individuals face.

To further support patients and their families, Young Tongues also produces a podcast that discusses various aspects of living with tongue cancer. The podcast offers valuable information, personal stories, and expert advice, making it a crucial resource for both patients and those supporting them. Through these initiatives, Young Tongues provides a lifeline of support, ensuring that no young tongue cancer patient has to face their journey alone.

Young Tongues is a newly UK registered charity, which was founded by Barbara Fountain from Norwich, who was diagnosed with tongue cancer aged 32. The results, published in Oral Oncology, showed a significant increase in the incidence of tongue cancer in people under 45, particularly in young women where the incidence has risen by a staggering 385% over 32 years. The Young Tongues are currently the only organisation dedicated to assisting young tongue cancer patients worldwide.
