The Trust is currently constructing a brand new building – you may have seen it! On the first floor there will be a brand new balcony offering some much needed outdoor space for our critically unwell patients and for staff respite.
For our Critical Care patients being able to access an outside space not only aids healing but improves mental health, the ability to see the sky, smell the flowers and take in natural Vitamin D. This can be taken for granted until you do not have access to it. For some patients it may be the last time they experience the outdoors. This is why the balcony is so essential to the Critical Care Team and their patients.
We aim to make the space as healing as possible with bespoke planting and lighting all at the right angles for bedded patients to enjoy.
We have hit our first target of £50,000 for the garden so we now move onto the next target of £20,000 for the visitors room, a place where visitors will hear bad news, a place where they can sit and reflect or rest. This room is so important for our visitors, having a loved one in the ITU or HDU can really drain your strength so having a place to go will support those family members in being able to be nearby but having some solace.
The Critical Care Team have gone above and beyond in their fundraising and were nominated for a BBC Three Counties Fundraising award, sadly they did not win but was so pleased to have been nominated in the first place!
