Story
Many children will have missed up to 6 months of schooling as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. The impact on their learning will be devastating. This is especially true for the most disadvantaged children, many of whom have had little, if any access to online learning. They have lost crucial practice in basic skills such as reading and writing, and the effects could be long-lasting.
Through our CREATE! campaign, Schoolreaders aims to help these children get back to reading with support from one of our amazing reading volunteers. With weekly one-to-one reading support they will have the chance to practice, to increase their confidence, and to become a good reader. Without this they are very unlikely to benefit fully from their future education.
The majority of us take for granted being able to read well. But shockingly around 1 in 6 adults in England and N. Ireland score at the lowest level of proficiency in literacy. That's 5.8 million people who can't read a medicine bottle or basic instructions.
By matching our volunteers to local primary school children, Schoolreaders is helping those children who can't yet read well. Every £15 will support one child's weekly one-to-one reading support for a whole year. Thank you for helping more children to learn to read well - you will be making a huge difference to their chances in life!
