Story
My doctor said I have diabetes.
He told me not to eat too many sweets or carbs and gave me a prescription for some medicine. He said I needed a monitor too, whatever that is.
That was it.
Now, what do I really do?
That was exactly the experience a friend of mine had. In our community, there were no classes to attend, no support groups, no one to answer questions or help with any lifestyle changes.
My friend was not alone in this plight. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the numbers of Sanilac County residents diagnosed with diabetes has increased from 7.8% or 3,362 people in 2012 to 9.5% or nearly 4,000 people in 2019.
Thats when I knew something had to be done.
Then in 2019. . . . . .
We established the Community Diabetes Center!
The Community Diabetes Center was established through a joint effort between the Croswell Lions Club and the Community Health Fitness Center Committee. After lots of fundraising, grant writing, and donations, we received a grant from the Lion Clubs International Foundation. We also received donations from many Lions Clubs, businesspeople, and community members so that we were able to complete renovations on a building and open our doors on August 11, 2020.
Our mission is to offer a no cost facility and to create a healthier community, one person at a time. In other words, clients can get help with:
monitoring their blood sugar
meal planning
becoming more active
participating in support groups
taking MSU Extension diabetes classes
and more!
Completely FREE!
Now we need your help. As you know nothing is really free. To continue offering our services free of charge, we need your support. Your donation of just $20 would make it possible for a person to receive help with meal planning, monitoring their blood sugar, attending support group meetings, and many other services, all free of charge.
Join us on May 21, 2021 and consider donating as a part of the #Give Where You Live
Celebration! Throughout the day, we will have the opportunity to receive various types of
matches for funds you give, so your money goes even further. You will have only 24 hours to give where your heart is.
Our goal is to raise $25,000 to support our services for a year. Any donation, large or small, is greatly appreciated. If you do not want to donate on-line, you can donate in person on May 21, 2021, at the #Give Where You Live Headquarters, located on the lawn of the Sanilac County Court House in Sandusky.
Won't you join us? Together we can make a huge difference in the lives of those confronting diabetes.
The Community Diabetes Center is a project of the Croswell Lions Club Incorporated, a 501C3 Public Charity.
