Children's Literature Festivals in Deprived Areas

Our mission is to fund FREE children's literature festivals in deprived areas and gift books to children who attend our community days in libraries and community spaces. In addition we have set up our own national children's book awards.

Story

Founded by author Christina Gabbitas - we have held seven successful children's literature festivals in Blackburn, Darwen, Keighley and Selby, and gifted free books to those attending the communities days. We have engaged with over 20,000 children and families since setting up our mission, and gifted over 8000 books. Our next planned festivals for 2023 are: Oldham, Keighley and Blackburn with Darwen. An average festival costs £25,000 - This pays for our authors/illustrators and to supply free books.

We are very grateful to have actress Jenny Agutter OBE and musician Michael Bradley of the Undertones band as our patron.

In addition to our festivals, we have recently set up a new national children's book awards. We think it's important for children to be the judge of books that are targeted at them. Once again we have chosen to focus on children in some of the most deprived areas in England with the inclusion of their libraries and schools in: Liverpool, Blackpool, Middlesbrough, Keighley, Brixton, Blackburn with Darwen, Accrington, Oldham, Hull and Selby. In Doncaster we have chosen to include children from the Levett School Pupil Referral Unit.

We want to be inclusive not exclusive. Help us to make children feel valued.
