You've probably heard the expression, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." At Children's Bureau of Southern California, we believe this really holds true when it comes to taking care of our community's most vulnerable children.
The goods news is that child maltreatment is preventable, and donations from supporters like you actually prevent harm to children at risk.
How is that possible? Let us tell you about Marcia.
As a child, Marcia lacked attention and did not feel loved. Although she aspired to be the best parent possible, she was nervous and anxious. Without parents to model after, how could she be a good one herself? With limited work experience and a high school diploma, how could she provide for herself and two-year-old Theresa? Insecure and scared, Marcia couldn't move forward. As her meager savings dwindled, her stress increased. She felt disconnected from Theresa and alone. She became depressed and withdrawn.
Then, she remembered. When she was pregnant, she had responded to a flyer promoting a free virtual baby shower hosted by Children's Bureau. Enticed by the prospect of games and gifts, she attended. She had a great time and was "showered" with useful information for new mothers and supplies for her baby. Most importantly, Maria made connections.
Marcia called Children's Bureau and was matched with her own family support counselor through the Healthy Families America program. Angelica became her partner in parenting, teaching her about child development milestones and what to expect at different stages. Marcia learned how to de-escalate Theresa's tantrums and how to bond through story time and puzzle play. As she gained parenting skills, Marcia developed greater overall confidence.
In just few months, Marcia secured a part-time job as a teachers aide and enrolled Theresa in pre-school. Marcia is now thriving in her workplace and Theresa is on track to being kindergarten ready! With caring guidance and support, Marcia was able to change the trajectory of both her life and her daughters.
Marcias story is one we see every day. Last year, Children's Bureau reached over 11,000 people with parenting information, support, and community resources and 1,358 parents enrolled and participated in ongoing parenting programs.
At Children's Bureau, we believe parents want to do their best but sometimes they need help. That's the concept behind our Family Resource Centers strategically located throughout urban Los Angeles, extending into rural Antelope Valley. Services such as parent education and personal coaching may not sound life changing but often are. By offering parents these resources, we can reach families who are teetering on the edge and reel them back in. By strengthening families, we can prevent child abuse and neglect.
What's more, one dollar invested in primary prevention can save $8 - $18 in future public spending.
So this holiday season, please consider making, not just a donation, but an investment in our future. On behalf of all who will participate in Children's Bureau programs in 2023, thank you in advance for your generosity.
