What is Challenge 71?
Challenge 71 is a Bristol Women's Voice fundraising campaign. Our charity would like to use this opportunity to highlight the issue of sexual harassment in our city and to invite you to support our work to prevent it.
Why do we need this?
According to a 2021 YouGov Survey of over 1,000 women commissioned by UN Women UK:
- 71% of women of all ages in the UK have experienced some form of sexual harassment in a public space, rising to 86% of those aged 18-34.
- Over 95% of all women do not report their experiences of sexual harassment, with 98% for women aged 18-34 not reporting incidences of sexual harassment.
This is a local issue
In our 2021 survey of 55 women, one respondent told us that they would not report a sexual harassment incident because:
I wouldn't be taken seriously by anyone. Women, girls and those who identify as female have this happen to them all the time, every day.
What can I do to help?
Get moving for BWV and join the race to end sexual harassment!
Take on an active challenge themed around the number 71 and raise money in solidarity with the 71% of UK women who have experienced sexual harassment in public.
E.g. 71 seconds, 71 steps, 71 minutes, 7.1 kilometres, 7.1 miles, 71 kilometres, 71 miles...
Complete your activity in a single day or over a longer period of time before the end of October to raise £71 or even £710.
What will happen to the funds that I raise?
The money you raise will go towards funding BWV's work to end sexual harassment, helping us to:

- Deliver training and support packages for male-dominated businesses, such as construction companies, to end sexual harassment
- Reestablish Bristol Zero Tolerance, a BWV initiative to free our city from gender-based violence, abuse, harassment and exploitation
£7,100 provides on-going support, training and facilitation of women's action groups for six months
£710 provides a bespoke support package to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. (£360 provides a half day sexual harassment training session for staff.)
£71 pays for volunteer expenses for a month
