Story
Celtic FC Foundation are returning to Malawi in 2024, for our first overseas volunteer trip since 2019.
Unfortunately, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were forced to postpone our proposed trip to Zambia, which was set to take place in June 2020.
Our 2024 participants will spend 8 days in Malawi, during which they will provide practical support on the ground, through Celtic FC Foundation, as we work in partnership with Classrooms for Malawi on an exciting new project.
Classrooms for Malawi is a Scottish-based charitable organisation, whose mission is to alleviate poverty through education. They improve places of education throughout Malawi, so that children can go to school in safe, dynamic learning environments.
Thanks to funds raised previously by the group, Celtic FC Foundation will support Classrooms for Malawi, as they conduct the construction of a new two-classroom block at Masalani Community Day Secondary School in the Chiradzulu district, in the southern region of Malawi.
The school, which previously benefited from support from the Foundation back in 2018, has only four classrooms but requires at least six, to cater for the range of secondary school subjects.
This new classroom block will be constructed by Classrooms for Malawi in time for our volunteers arriving in June and their placement will involve painting the new areas and adding teaching aids to greater enhance the learning environment for the children, as well as a number of other activities which will support the development of the school.
Whilst in Malawi, there will also be an opportunity for our group to visit some of the Kitchens built as part of our 67 Kitchens project, which was delivered in partnership with Mary’s Meals thanks to funds raised via our #LionsLegacy campaign in 2017. With 47 of the kitchens located in Malawi (the remaining 20 being in Zambia), our volunteers will assist with the Mary’s Meals feeding programme, which provides life-changing meals to some of the world’s poorest children every school day.
Each volunteer will be tasked with raising a minimum of £1,000 as a charitable contribution to Celtic FC Foundation. This will support the development work the volunteers will undertake in Malawi, as well as the Foundation’s projects supporting vulnerable children and adults at home.
