Story
On 15th December 2019, the Reverend Kathryn Percival will be installed as Portsmouth Cathedral's new Canon Chancellor.
We have agreed with Kathryn to mark her installation with an important fundraiser to improve the fabric of the Cathedral.
The South Door opened by HRH Diana, Princess of Wales on 16th October 1990 to mark the completion of the final stage of building work is now in urgent need of repair using traditional craftsmanship. As well as improving access to the Cathedral, its reopening would give visitors and worshippers a most beautiful view across the nave.
In launching the fundraising effort Nigel Atkinson, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and Chairman of the Portsmouth Cathedral Development Trust (PCDT), said 'This is a tangible and important way to mark the start of Kathryns ministry at the Cathedral and into the wider community. What better way to mark the occasion than literally to open a door that has been closed to mark this important event in the life of the Cathedral and the ministry of Kathryn. I am very pleased that the PCDT has donated £1,000 to start the fundraising drive. I encourage others to join us in making a donation.'
The Dean writes, 'Welcoming a new member of the Cathedral Clergy team is always a special time. I am very grateful to the Portsmouth Cathedral Development Trust for kick starting this fundraising effort. Do join us in helping to literally open a door of the Cathedral to mark this important event in the life of our cathedral and the ministry of Kathryn.'
Refurbishment is estimated at £8,000.
The work would be carried out in spring 2020.
