Story
CASBA plays a vital role in the lives of hundreds of people with learning disabilities every year. Without us, they would find it very hard to get the support they need. They tell us how valuable our services are and how important it is that we raise enough money to keep them gooing.
Because there is so little understanding of learning disabilities, in many situations our citizens are left confused and frustrated. It's difficult to ask people in authority for help so may people do as Jolene says here:
I did not always understand, so I pretended. Now I understand better as I can ask my advocate"
One of our biggest and most important projects works with parents who have a learning disability to keep them and their children safe. The chances of your children being taken away if you you are a parent who has a learning disability are far higher than for those without. Our mission is to give parents the skills to keep their families together. Our new project has identified that we need to get involved earlier, before crises happen and social services, or courts become involved. We are doing that by providing training, support and one-to-one advocacy with pregnant women and young moms.
One woman who successfully kept her child after help from our project said:
I wouldn’t be a mom without an advocate, I feel like a woman again”
We are seeing how much the cost-of-living crisis is affecting our citizens, so we are providing financial advocacy, helping people to claim the benefits they need, plan their budgets and deal with debts if it has reached that stage.
We also provide crisis advocacy for anyone who is feeling unsafe and needs help to sort out problems in areas such as housing, health or with legal matters.
