Story

It's that time of year again when Community Action Nepal asks you to join us in our summer social media challenge.

Last year, we asked you to climb your stairs and summit 'Everest', alongside Doug Scott, Sir Chris Bonington, Reinhold Messner and many other of the world's greatest mountaineers. It was a huge success and we want to thank you for making it so memorable. We also want to invite you to take part in the Community Action Nepal 2021 summer social challenge.

This year we're celebrating the life and climbs of our late, great founder and friend, Doug Scott. In his lifetime, Doug reached the summits of over forty significant peaks, including the seven highest on each of the seven continents. He often set new routes, tackling some of the hardest technical climbs in the world. His climbing style was described as 'visionary', earning him a plethora of awards and inspiring innumerable people to get outdoors and seek out new adventures.

To Doug, it was as equally important (if not more!) to be mindful of the journey, and not simply the summit itself. In some cases, it was the journey back from the summit that gave his adventures most significance - not least his journey down The Ogre. Doug was as adept at writing about his summits as he was at reaching them, delivering a concoction of summit-stories and anecdotes of his dear friends, nestled perfectly among his thoughts on Buddhist philosophies and vegetable-growing. Bolstered by his knowledge and passion for geography and history, his eclectic narratives have inspired countless others to seek out adventures of their own.

So this year, we invite you to help us by seeking out your own 'summit' and climbing it! Be it a mountain or a tabletop in your kitchen, a rugged cliff-face or a chair in the dining room. You might even choose to climb your stairs again - and we'd be very supportive of that too! Then all you have to do is take a photo and upload it to social media, and caption it with the most epic story of your achievement as possible! Following your successful summit, if you want to donate to our JustGiving campaign, your money would go directly towards supporting our amazing work in Nepal.

We would love to see your imaginations run wild with this one. Be as creative as you possibly can. Don your climbing gear again and scale your sofa, put your boots on and tackle your nearest hill. Whatever it is, make it epic! If you're out in the wild, take note of your surroundings, look out for local wildlife or research some of the area's history. Let's make Doug proud and enjoy the journey!

1. Choose your 'summit' - the more challenging the better

2. Climb it and make it look as epic as possible!

3. Take a photo

4. Upload it to social media with the amazing story of your summit

5. Make a small donation to support our work

BONUS POINTS!

For those of you willing to go the extra mile, we'd love to see you recreating some of your favourite Doug Scott moments. Can you crawl down your local hill, create a makeshift bivouac, tackle the Hillary Step, or read Seven Years in Tibet whilst marooned in a snowhole with your best mate? All we ask is that you do it safely, and please don't break any bones.

To help inspire you, over the next three months, we're going to be bringing you stories from Doug's finest climbs, as well as original photos and quotes and videos from those who were either with him on the expeditions, those who knew him dearly, or simply those who have been inspired by him - all of which have been created specially for this campaign!

By joining us on this adventure, you'll be taking part alongside Sir Chris Bonington, Paul 'Tut' Braithwaite, Reinhold Messner, Leo Houlding + many, many others!

Good luck with your adventures - we can't wait to see your photos soon!!
