Story

Earlier this year, members of Garioch Heritage Society took part in a discussion on a local Facebook page around the Iron skeleton of a boat near the start of the old Aberdeenshire Canal in Port Elphinstone. Following this information, our team began discussions with Aberdeenshire Council Archaeology Services and Kirkwood Commercial Park regarding the ownership of the boat and the possibility of removing it from its current location to the Centre for preservation and display. It was established that Kirkwood Commercial Park were the owners of the land, and a conversation was established with them regarding the boat, its history, and the possibility of removal. We are pleased to say that Kirkwood Commercial Park have graciously agreed to allow the Centre to remove the boat to the Centre.

The work now begins to arrange the safe relocation of the boat, its conservation, and display in the centre. This work will ensure that this important piece of the history of the Garioch is preserved and shared for generations to come.
