Uganda has a population of 42.9 million, 84% living in rural areas with limited access to primary, secondary or tertiary care. There is 1 surgeon per 100,000 population. In rural Uganda hand trauma is generally managed by OCOs & MCOs, rather than trained doctors and surgeons. BSSH Overseas Committee Chair, Jonathan Jones, and the Peterborough Hospital team established a link with Kisiizi Hospital over past years.

In April 2019, Jonathan Jones and Rebecca Nicholas (trainee representative) ran the first formal BSSH hand trauma course in Uganda by invitation from Kiziizi hospital. 42 delegates attended lectures, practical sessions and small group discussions, and provided excellent participant feedback (see the report below). A further course was planned to take place in May 2020 however this has been postponed due to COVID-19.
