Story

With a previous educational visit in 2017 there was a jointly sponsored BSSH and BFIRST 3 day cadaveric hand trauma course run in March 2019 at the ALERT Hospital attended by almost 60 orthopaedic and plastic surgical residents. The course layout involved short lectures on hand trauma followed by a discussion of clinical cases and clinical examination of live patients with traumatic hand and upper limb injuries.

The cadaveric component of the course took place at Aabet Hospital. Residents had demonstrations of upper limb approaches, common soft tissue flap reconstruction options and nerve/tendon harvesting techniques. The visiting faculty really enjoyed the experience of teaching enthusiastic and knowledgeable residents and are grateful for the warm hospitality shown by their Ethiopian surgical colleagues.
