Story

Our vision is to stop road crashes, reduce harm and ensure every road victim gets the support they need, for as long as they need it.

It's not a nice fact to hear but every year, on average, 1,683 people die on UK roads. These aren't just numbers—they're mothers, fathers, children, and friends, whose lives have been cut short in an instant. At Brake, we believe that every road death is preventable. We hope you can join us, take action and make a change.

This year, we’re putting road victims at the heart of Road Safety Week, and through the Brake 5 Challenge, we invite you to join us in honoring those lost lives and making our roads safer.

I had driven that road a hundred times, but that day, a car veered across the lane… I was lucky. But not everyone is. It could have been my family.

Sarah never imagined that an ordinary drive home would change her life forever. She is one of the many supporters of Brake’s vision and is taking part in the Brake 5 Challenge because she knows the importance of road safety.

How You Can Make a Difference

Participating in the Brake 5 Challenge is simple, but its benefit is immense. You can get involved as an individual or as part of a corporate team.

Individuals

Walk, run, or wheel your way to completing 5 kilometres a day for 7 days or 55 kilometres over the week. Your goal? To raise £105 and help save lives on our roads.

Corporate Teams

Bring your colleagues together and aim to cover 55 kilometres collectively during Road Safety Week (17-23 November). Set a fundraising target of £1,683, a tribute to the 1,683 people who die on UK roads every year. Challenge your company to lead the way for road safety.

Your Support Matters

Your participation in Brake 5 funds vital road safety programmes and supports families affected by road crashes. At Brake, we understand that the right support at the right time can change the course of someone's life. Brake’s National Road Victim Service (NRVS) is a free, professional, trauma-informed service dedicated to providing expert emotional and practical support to thousands of families during their darkest times. There are many more who need our help, and your support makes a real difference.

We provide you with everything you need to make your challenge a success, including:

Ongoing fundraising support from our dedicated team.

A digital toolkit filled with resources to share your challenge with friends and family.

Road Safety Week newsletters to keep you updated and inspired.

By joining the Brake 5 Challenge, you’re not just walking or running— you’re helping save lives, each pound you raise will bring us closer to a world where no one dies on the road - Ross Moorlock, Brake CEO
