At Bookmark, we want every child to read.
One in four children leave primary school unable to read well. Disadvantaged children are disproportionately affected with the attainment gap increasing in 2022 to the widest it has been in a decade.
Bookmark helps children to become confident, skilled and joyful readers by delivering wrap-around support which includes:
1) Delivering one-to-one reading programmes, either online or in person, supporting children who are struggling to read by connecting them to fully trained and vetted volunteers
2) Delivering high quality books and training resources to help schools develop a ‘whole school reading culture’, creating rich and rewarding reading spaces that spark a child’s love of reading
3) Distributing our very own Story Corner magazine, providing high-quality reading material to children with limited access to books, to combat learning loss during school holidays
4) We provide wider support to schools in the forms of resources and grants for teachers to help them better support their pupils
Reading isn't just about books. It's about reading a birthday card, road sign, or safety manual. It's about understanding a job application or a lifesaving prescription.
Children who don't read well are more likely to drop out of school, become unemployed, or even have a shorter life expectancy.
