More than 1 in 4 children leave primary school unable to read well. We improve children's literacy by promoting a reading for pleasure culture in schools, with a focus on supporting children in the most disadvantaged communities.

Story

This March, you can make your book club count. Donate the cost of your book to Bookclubs for Bookmark to help a child learn to read.

1 in 5 children aged 5-8 don't own a single book of their own at home. The effect of this is clear: levels of reading enjoyment among children were at their lowest in 2022 and was particularly worse for children receiving Free School Meals (National Literacy Trust).

"Reading enjoyment has been reported as more important for childrens educational success than their familys socio-economic status"(OECD).

Reading isn't just about books. It's about reading a road sign, a safety manual, a birthday card. It's understanding a job application or the health information that could save your life. Children who don't read well by age 7 are six times more likely to drop out of school. These children are also more likely to go on to be unemployed, live in poverty, and even have a shorter life expectancy.

Now, you could change their stories.

For the cost of an average paperback book, you could gift two children a book to inspire a love of reading.

For the cost of an average hardback, you could gift almost 40 children their very own copy of Bookmarks Story Corner magazine.
