Story
Meet Becca, she volunteers on our Good Neighbour Scheme, we asked her a few questions about volunteering for SCCCC.
What made you volunteer? I attended an awards dinner where Mark (Chief
Executive of SCCCC) spoke and I immediately wanted to find out more about the charity. Mark had me in tears when highlighting the number of
isolated older people living in our community. The statistic is horrifying! I couldn't wait to get signed up as a volunteer and start visiting an older person.
How many people have you supported?
I provided telephone support during the pandemic to a number of older people but Irene was the amazing lady that I visited regularly. I had been visiting Irene for a couple of years and we developed a really strong bond I loved my visits with her. We talk about all sorts, we laugh lots, we put the world to right and I have learnt so much about the history of Sheffield, especially during the war. Irene sadly died in 2023, it broke my heart, she was such a wonderful person and I only hope I brightened her day as much as she brightened mine.
Would you recommend volunteering with SCCCC?
No question 100%. We all live busy lives but I think its so important to take time out for somebody else. Who doesn't have time to sit down and talk to somebody for an hour? I run my own business and time can be tight but dedicating an hour or two to somebody else not only supports the older person you are visiting (which is the main thing) but can be hugely personally rewarding.
In loving memory of Irene
