Story
We are running an appeal in partnership with Cyclox to provide free of charge, refurbished bikes for key workers in Oxford as well as bike maintenance and tuition. We want to help our community's NHS and social care heroes to be able to get to work if they can't use public transport, and we are aiming to raise enough funds to provide 300 bikes for our amazing key workers in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
The idea for this project came from Witney based organisation Windrush Bike Project, who began donating bikes to key workers in early April 2020 and have seen a significant rise in demand further across the county. In response to this growing need, Active Oxfordshire began talks with partner organisations including Cyclox, Broken Spoke Bike Co-op and Oxford City Council to launch this concept in Oxford city.
Since the project launched at the end of April 2020, we have been able to give out an incredible 200 bikes to our local NHS and social care keyworkers. This project is now being led by Cyclox alongside partners and an army of amazing volunteer mechanics and donors. Demand is still very high and we want to ensure that we also provide wider bike maintenance and tutition for our key workers. Please donate today and help us meet this growing demand, so that our amazing key workers can get to work safely.
£20 could provide a lock and lights for one bike
£60 could cover all of the costs to provide one bike for a key worker
About the project
Bikes are donated free of charge and checked over by volunteer mechanics, with final safety checks completed by qualified mechanics and bike shops. Broken Spoke Bike Co-op are also able to provide refurbished bikes towards the project. Once bikes are ready to go on the road, they will be allocated to NHS and social care keyworkers, working together with Oxford University Hospitals for referrals.
