Story
Proudly celebrating 31 years of service to our community, The Berwick & District Cancer Support Group, more familiarly known locally as 'Berwick Cancer Cars', was founded in 1992 by a group of people who through experience knew how difficult it was to get to main hospitals from our area for cancer appointments.
Our group is run on a totally voluntary basis and many of our members have experienced living alongside cancer in one way or another. All our volunteers are committed to keeping the service we provide available to all who may need it. We own six dedicated cancer patient transport cars, covering over 130,000 miles each year (the average car journey is 120 miles) making 1,115 hospital journeys.
Berwick Cancer Cars have had a Great North Run Team since 2015 when we had seven runners taking part, our team has grown and grown over the years and is our most important fundraising event of the year and makes an enormous impact on helping us help our community.
We are a local registered charity supported by our fundraising and donations helping us to continue and expand our vital cancer related services. In 2022 we were delighted to receive the Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the MBE for charities) and our services to the community were recently celebrated by the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust Foundation (watch our video, we're very proud of the recognition!)
