Story
Belvedere College Sleep-Out is almost an institution on the streets of Dublin. This year we are marking our 40th anniversary of Sleep-Out. We never imagined that in 1983 when we started this campaign that our society would be facing its largest number of homeless persons ever in 2023. We thought we had hit that record in 2022 when there were over 11,000 homeless, and now that figure is over 12,000. Where will it end? There are so many factors at play with the crisis - lack of affordable housing, excessive rent prices, an unprecedented influx of people fleeing war and other factors as they seek to find a place to call home in Ireland.
In the face of this extraordinary crisis, organisations such as Focus Ireland and the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) are playing instrumental roles in providing support and solutions.
Focus Ireland, a leading charity in this sector, continues to be at the forefront of combating homelessness through its multifaceted approach. The charity not only offers emergency accommodation but also focuses on prevention strategies, addressing the root causes of homelessness. Their efforts include affordable housing initiatives, counselling services, and educational programs aimed at empowering individuals to break the cycle of homelessness. Contributions to the Belvedere Sleep-Out campaign will further bolster the impactful work of Focus Ireland, expanding their reach and effectiveness in helping those in greatest need.
Similarly, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), known for its commitment to aiding displaced individuals, extends its efforts to address homelessness in Ireland. Leveraging their expertise in providing humanitarian assistance, JRS offers support to refugees and asylum seekers who often find themselves disproportionately affected by homelessness. Their work encompasses not only immediate relief but also long-term integration programs to facilitate stability and independence.
Supporting the Belvedere Sleep-Out campaign ensures that Focus Ireland and JRS can continue their vital work, making a tangible difference in the lives of those who have no place to call home. With your support we can collectively strive towards a more compassionate and inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity for a secure and dignified life.
