Story
Zac Pritchard
Zac ended his life 5 years ago on 25th August. We are asking anyone to WALK or RUN 2 . 5 miles a day from the 1st to 25th August in memory of Zac.
We wanted to create something positive to commemorate this devastating life event, but an event which started the charity. So we are asking people to walk or run various distances in Zac's memory.
When he wanted support and strategies to help with his mental health, there was none, he was discharged from the home treatment team on the Friday afternoon and ended his life on the Sat morning.
Behind the Sm;le
A short while after this devastating day Zac's parents wondered what they could do, support for them was not available, as it’s a postcode lottery. Zac cared for so many people in his life, even while studying for his degree and when unwell, as he tried not to show others he was suffering with mental illness.
In the many messages after Zac’s death, the common theme was of shock, because many people weren’t fully aware of his suffering, how big a smile he always had, how caring and supportive he was. Then, there followed what can we do; are you looking for donations etc.
So, his parents researched and took advice from various people and organisations. This led to them setting up this charity. Initially to support anyone, currently over 18, with poor mental health, by facilitating peer support groups, this has developed from a few people sitting around chatting to around 15 to 20 people on a weekly basis. We have also grown the type of groups some are social, some sitting together and talking, some are walks or meet ups in cafes.
Unfortunately, we don't have a formal base, due to funds and not enough volunteer support, Zac's mother is running this with four volunteers and the trustees, all work so their time is limited.
Currently, 100% of our money in one form or another goes back into the charity.
These photos are Zac's last photos of his walk up Snowdon with his mother.
Here are some quotes from some attendees;
“I enjoy coming to the group because I feel like I’m part of a community and that I won’t be judged for how I feel. I’m also grateful for the love and consideration the members show for each other."
"Outside our weekly group sessions, I have been on walks with other members: recently we have followed the Elephant Trail around the city centre."
