Story
For countless young people due to leave care, the easing of lockdown measures means anything but a return to 'normality'.
Instead many, like Emma, are facing an uncertain future which includes increased risk of isolation, mental ill-health and homelessness.
Emma called our Care Advice Line shortly before her 18th birthday. She was terrified as she'd learned she was going to be moved to a shared house with people she'd never met - during the coronavirus lockdown. We fought for Emma and put a stop to her being forced to leave care, but only a few extra months were granted.
We support the government's decision that no child should leave care during the pandemic. However, this protection is temporary, and Emma and thousands of young people are anxiously waiting to hear when they will be forced to leave their homes. Simply because they turned 18.
Calls to our Care Advice Line increased by 75% during lockdown. Young people are asking: When do I have to move? Where will I go? Will anyone help me? What will happen to me?.
That's why we're calling for government to permanently remove the cliff edge that many young people in care face. So that no one is pushed into personal crisis because of their birthday.
We're also helping young people like Emma right now by offering 1-1 and group support and our freephone Care Advice Service. We're determined to be there for every young person that needs us. But we can't do it without you.
You can help us be there for Emma and all young care leavers.
If you can, please donate now.
