Story
Christmas is a difficult time for so many. It is the time when financial problems, debts, isolation, family break-up and lack of support are hardest to face and COVID has exacerbated these. The people that we support come from across all communities and backgrounds.
BCMs Christmas Support Programme gives hope and emotional support to those who struggle, as they know there is somebody to look after them at Christmas.. We try to help as many people as possible each year, using our own resources and generous donations from our supporters, but the whole venture would not be possible without the support from local churches, businesses, schools and members of the public.
In 2020, even in the midst of a COVID lockdown, BCM distributed 3,500 toy and gift parcels to children and young people.
Each year BCM receives applications from needy families. Those applications are assessed by BCMs Community Services Manager, using evidence such as benefit books. Applications are cross-referenced with other charities providing help at Christmas to avoid duplication. Those who receive help from BCMs Christmas programme also include referrals from other agencies e.g. social services, SureStart centres, Womens Aid, homeless people living in hostels and people who have been identified by BCM during our other programmes throughout the year.
