Story
91 year old Pearl is full of life and enthusiasm! She usually loves attending our Active Ageing clubs but during Covid-19 our clubs have been closed and lockdown life has been a little dull.
To help keep Pearl occupied and stay connected, Age UK Hertfordshire provided her with a tablet and one of our tech volunteers gave her some help some help to show her the ropes. Pearls delighted, she has never had a tablet or a computer before! She told us,
I know I am slow and it takes time for me to learn new things, but I am 91! The tablet has given me something to do and I can search new things.
Pearl found the home she grew up in on Google. She lived there more than 90 years ago from when she was 9 months old, right up to her wedding day at 25. It was a keepers cottage and the rent was 7 shillings and sixpence per week. This equates to £17.17p based on the year 1930. The house is now a 5 bed B&B and its most recent sale price was £700,000!!!
Pearl tells us that once her and her friends from the club are up to scratch with their new technology, they are planning to enjoy a zoom meeting so they can all see each other virtually and chat.
I still keep in touch with my friends from the club via telephone but it isn't the same as actually seeing them. I cant wait to see them again.
She spends many long and lonely days on her own, and with her grandchildren living all around the country, the tablet has also been a great way for Pearl to keep in touch with her
loved ones. They are able to exchange emails and this has made Pearl feel less isolated and made her life more bearable.
Thank you for the tablet and whoever thought of me to be allowed one. I really enjoy using it, even if it is just to play about on.
