International Women's Day 2023
This International Women's Day, we're celebrating Lucy, a star pupil in our Girls to School Project.
Says Lucy: With the help of Action Through Enterprise, I can be a role model, because we are the first girls that have access to Senior High School. I want to be a midwife in the future so that I will help my village people. That is my dream.
Enabling girls to attend Senior High School has a profound effect on their life chances each additional year at school increases their earnings as adults by 20%. It also benefits the whole community, reducing poverty, teenage pregnancy and marriage, child mortality, violence against women and HIV.
We spoke to the 22 girls we currently send to SHS and they told us they expected to get better jobs and earn more, were less likely to marry in their teens and had more confidence than girls who don't attend SHS.
One of the main reasons girls don't stay in education is the cost - SHS involves boarding away from home, buying equipment, paying for food etc. Many parents cant afford to send their girls to school. Can you help us send more?
£14 - Trunk
£25 - Equipment and books
£50 - Mattress and bedding
£75 - Toiletries and sanitary pads for three years
£550 - Covers everything a girl needs to go to SHS
Let's do more than just celebrate International Women's Day - let's enable girls like Lucy to change their lives for better so they can make their dream come true.
