Story

Our cyclists are taking on either the 56.8km and 100km route, starting and finishing at the impressive Kilnwick Percy Golf Club and cycling through the rolling hills of the East Riding of Yorkshire, pedalling parts of the renowned Tour de Yorkshire.

This event will raise crucial funds for research and to support for those affected by ataxia. Together and with your support we can hit our target of raising £35,000.

This September, be part of Team Ataxia UK sponsoring your friends and family to cycle towards a cure for ataxia. To see each of the cyclist's individual fundraising pages, just click their name on the right. Thank you for your support.

What is ataxia?

Ataxia is the name given to a group of conditions that affects the cerebellum: the part of the brain that controls movement and sends signals through the nervous system and so causes problems with balance, co-ordination and speech, disrupting your ability to communicate and control your body. It can also affect your heart. There are many different types of ataxia and it is progressive, meaning that it gets worse over time. There is currently no cure.

Over 10,500 adults and children in the UK have ataxia

What do Ataxia UK do?

o Ataxia is a rare condition, and funding the medical research needed to find a cure is a challenge. Ataxia UK is the leading charity in the UK supporting those affected by ataxia, and funds and promotes research with the aim of finding treatments and a cure. Since 2000 we have invested £7 million in research.

Every £1 Ataxia UK invests in research results in £3 raised in further funding for ataxia research. We provide support services including a dedicated helpline; information leaflets on living with ataxia; events and conferences where people can meet and share information; videos by the ataxia community and healthcare professionals; and a network of Branches and Support Groups where people can access valuable peer support and build friendships.

Our magazine and e-newsletters are full of advice and information, our website is often the first port of call for those that are newly diagnosed, and our online forums provide much-needed peer support from home. We offer free membership and vital support from the difficult time of first diagnosis through all the challenges people with ataxia face.

Our vision is to find treatments and cures for all the ataxias so that one day we will be able to live in a world free from this devastating condition.

Why your support is crucial

o Ataxia UK receives no government funding and so relies heavily on fundraising. A large proportion of our income comes from events and activities organised by our loyal and hardworking supporters , and their kind friends, family and colleague who sponsor them, like you. Even the smallest amount helps us towards our goal. Together we can beat ataxia.
