Story

We are fundraising for a specialist bed and sensory equipment to keep Kurt safe in his bed.

Kurt's Mam has wrote below a little snapshot of Kurt's story.

''Kurt is a 6 year old boy who was diagnosed with autism when he was 2. He has a severe learning difficulty his learning age is 6 -12 months. He has very limited understanding and is totally non verbal, this makes life really hard.

Kurt requires 24 hour supervision for his own safety as he as has no awareness of any danger. He has a special needs buggy which he always needs to be in when he is out for his own safety.

Kurt hardly sleeps, he has between 0 and 3 hours a night and when he wakes up he needs supervision all night as he will get out of bed ,leave the room and wander the house with no awareness of what he is doing. As parents we take turns to be awake with him all night its really tough surviving on basically nothing. He shouts through the night which affects the whole house, and won't stay in his room unless someone is with him to keep him safe. He is on 8mg of melatonin which sends him to sleep but not for long. Through the day he doesn't even go to sleep he just doesn't understand and is constantly hyperactive. We are trying to get a special bed which will keep him safe during the night but we lack the funding to do so. This bed will change our lives and Kurt's as well as it will keep him safe and hopefully train him to sleep.

Kurt struggles with everyday life if he isn't in a strict routine, he has huge meltdowns and constantly shouts and screams through the day because he cant communicate with us. He's double incontinent so has no awareness of when he needs to go. He can't express when he's hungry or thirsty. He can't cope with new faces either and gets angry and lashes out or has meltdowns that last for hours. We can't even go out properly as a family and do things his siblings may want to do.

We survive on empty most days but he is our baby, and we will do what we need to help him.

Having sensory equipment in the room for Kurt, will keep him occupied and will be designed to hopefully help his drift back off to sleep naturally, when he awakes during the night.

We have asked for support with local authorities, but unfortunately we are not in the correct catchment area to receive this support.

*Update 5/5/2022 We are over the moon to say Kurt now has his specialist bed and is doing great. He is even able to go back to sleep on a night now which is honestly life changing. We are continuing to work with BLF to turn our garden into a safe space for Kurt.

Due to Kurts needs and routine, holidays are out of the picture and days out can be really difficult so we would love to have a space out doors for Kurt to use but happy and safe. *

We are now working with The Bradley Lowery Foundation to support our fundraising campaign. All fees are covered by the charity so Kurt receives 100% of your donations. Any help you can give really make a huge difference to Kurt.''

Any funds remaining, will go to BLF to support their ongoing campaigns.
