Running to Improve Health Outcomes for Sheffield's Learning Disability Community
Amy has worked as an NHS nurse for the last 7 years at Sheffield's Northern General hospital. Supporting people with a learning disability has always been a priority for Amy, and she is the 'Learning Disability Link' for her ward.
This will be Amy's first marathon, and she is running to raise funds for Sheffield Mencap and Gateway. Sponsoring Amy will support our services to improve access to healthcare for people with a learning disability. Her goal is to improve health outcomes and raise awareness of the current health inequalities.
I want to make sure that everybody, regardless of abilities or additional needs, gets the support they need to be able to access the full range of care and services they are entitled to (Amy).
The 2018 Learning Disabilities Mortality Review (LeDeR) found that 38% of people with a learning disability died from an avoidable cause, compared to 9% in a comparison population of people without a learning disability. These deaths could have been avoided by the provision of appropriate, inclusive healthcare. It is crucial that the barriers to accessing good quality healthcare are removed, and reasonable adjustments put in place to improve health outcomes for people with a learning disability.
Through sponsoring Amy to complete the London Marathon, you are helping fund Sheffield Mencap and Gateway's services including our 'Health Support' project. This service gives personalised support to people with a learning disability to enable them to attend their Annual Health Check and receive all routine vaccinations. You can find out more here. Sheffield Mencap also works with GP practices across Sheffield to ensure they are providing the appropriate support and reasonable adjustments that allow everybody with a learning disability to receive the best quality healthcare.
