Story

Emma’s extraordinary feat of endurance, hand-in-hand with your generosity, will give children the opportunity to live their best lives.

Emma's charity, Opening Your Heart to Bhutan has grown from a humble start in rural East Bhutan 10 years ago.

Due to the remoteness, children born with additional needs face extreme difficulties. The lack of tarmac roads makes it very hard to access a school where they can learn life and vocational skills. They can now enjoy every child's right to an education.

In 2015, after being inspired by a girl physically struggling with day-to-day life, Emma made a lifelong commitment to helping children with additional needs in any way she could.

It started by knitting hats, and then crucial fundraising for blankets and bedding for the children followed. This forged links between the East and West, and Emma’s charity was born and just like Emma herself, up and running and in demand!

Emma’s next challenge was to write a book about her story so far.

From a previous life as a Financial Analyst, a life-changing event brought her to a new life as an ordained Nun. The royalties have boosted the charity’s funds.

Always looking for improvements, her next project was building an additional needs residential school for 65 students in Drak-tsho, Tashigang. Since the school was built, the charity has added many accessible facilities, such as wheelchair-friendly paths and ramps, dormitories, toilets, washrooms, laundry room, dining room, kitchen, classrooms, library, and a sports ground.

In 2025 the fundraising currently stands at £750,000 ($1,000,000). Boosting this by £403,000 by the end of the Trek is no mean feat!

Emma is not a mountain trekker; in fact, she is not that fond of walking! This trek is an extraordinary feat of physical and mental endurance for anyone. It embodies Emma’s compassion, commitment and energy to support the children who benefit from her charity Opening Your Heart to Bhutan
