Ensure Alsama's 880 students don't lose their futures to the chaos of war.
Over the last 4 years, Alsama’s 880 students have been on an incredible journey. Having fled ISIS and war in Syria, 95% of our students joined Alsama illiterate and innumerate. In 5 months, our students overcome illiteracy and in 4 years, our top students have become eloquent and highly capable young adults. In 18 months’ time, they are due to apply to University. If you’ve met Maram, Louay, Wissal, or their peers, you will know their infectious joy and extraordinary potential. Maram aspires to study Business and Finance. Why? So she can build a life for her family, support her community, contribute to Alsama, and eventually, return to Syria to rebuild.
Heavy bombardments in Beirut have massively disrupted our operations.
Bombing close to the Shatila and Bourj al Barajneh camps have forced our education centres to close. Staff and students have been displaced.
Alsama will not stop.
We will keep educating all of our students, and ensure Maram and her peers go to University in 18 months’ time. We have to adapt. In the immediate future, Alsama will teach online. Students - from their homes or whatever shelter they have found - will continue lessons over Zoom or WhatsApp. We are also renting safe houses to serve as 'mini' Alsama centres where students can gather to continue their studies.
We need your help.
We will set up an emergency fund to support our students. The situation is evolving fast, but it is already clear that we need to provide our students access to wifi to attend classes online. We need to buy school materials. We may need to go further.
We are all hoping for peace. When stability returns, any money left over will support the students in their normal Alsama schooling. But for now our children need your support to continue their education despite the chaos of war.
These are challenging times but - with your help - Alsama will meet the challenge. Last Friday, Louay - one of our top students - wrote a message on our HQ whiteboard: ‘Don’t lose today’s happiness because of yesterday’s pain’. Our mission now is to ensure Louay doesn’t lose tomorrow’s opportunities because of today’s war.
You could make the difference.
