Alice is a cheeky, fun loving toddler and a little adrenaline junky. She is a super intelligent little bean who loves to learn, read, sing and dance and loves being pushed on the swing higher than anyone else at the park! Alice suffered a severe brain injury at birth. The damage due to a lack of oxygen at the time of her birth has resulted in a diagnosis of Dyskinetic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. For Alice this means she has very low muscle tone in her trunk.

At nearly two years old Alice is slowly building the strength and coordination to roll, sit unaided and to support herself through her arms and legs. She enjoys physiotherapy and is easily the most hard working and determined person I have ever met. In terms of mobility, the extent of her injury means that independent movement will always be very challenging and Alice may need to use supportive equipment to assist her in all her adventures but her willingness to work hard and her determination to do things for herself will push her far beyond anyone’s expectations.

We, her family, friends and cheerleaders will do everything we can to support her in her mission to be as independent as possible. We are working hard to match her energy and find the best and most suitable therapies, treatments and equipment to support her goals. We want to provide her with access to regular active physio, hydrotherapy, rebound therapy and oxygen therapy. None of these are available on the NHS but all have the potential to change Alice’s life and give her independence.

Alice cannot yet speak but like a typical two year old she knows what she wants and how to get it. We have recently trailed an eye-gaze system which allows Alice to communicate using her eyes to navigate an AAC system. We have known for a while that she is intelligent beyond her years and that she has a lot to say but allowing her to have a means of communicating which can actually keep up with her intellectual ability is incredible and something we feel is essential.
