Story
The Alexis-Athena Wyatt Scholarship was created to honor the memory of our alumna who was killed in a car accident on February 3, 2020, shortly after graduating with her BA in English and her BS in Secondary Education. Alexis (pictured second from the right) was a graduate of the Honors College, a popular consultant at the FHSU Writing Center, a beloved member of both Delta Zeta Sorority and Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, and a finalist for the Torch Award in 2019. She had a tremendous positive impact on everyone she met because of her generous and loving spirit.
The scholarship was established as an endowed scholarship with an initial donation of $3,000 from Alexis's friends and classmates in FHSU's chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. We chose to start an endowed scholarship so that the award can be given every year in perpetuity as a tribute to Alexis. Because she was a scholarship recipient with a passion for English and academics, we wanted to honor her memory by creating a scholarship in her name, which as her mom said, Alexis would have loved. The scholarship can be awarded to any English major with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
An endowed scholarship requires a starting fund of $10,000 before it can be awarded, and between the starting donation of $3,000 and additional donations from other students and faculty, the balance of the fund is currently around $6,400. We would like to be able to begin awarding the scholarship for Fall 2022, so we are hoping to reach the minimum endowment level so that can happen.
