Story
We want to help people like Munira. Munira grew up in a single-parent council estate with her single mum. Against the odds, she got into university. But the experience eroded her confidence and made her feel out of place.
Her friends were shocked to find out she didn't own her home and helped her mum to pay rent. Their parents owned their homes. And her lecturers couldn't relate to many of her challenges.
She lost a lot of ambition and just wanted to finish her degree. But then she found our leadership programme.
She was in a group of people from similar backgrounds, facing similar challenges, and still succeeded.
Sir Ken Olisa’s story of starting in a single-parent council house to becoming the first Black British Board Member of an FTSE100 company deeply resonated with her.
In her own words,
“He never let his circumstances hold him back. His example motivated me to adopt a new mindset, focus on possibilities rather than obstacles, and refrain from seeing myself as a victim of my circumstances.”
During the programme, Munira’s team were tasked with solving a business-related challenge. They came up with a health tech start-up idea, which they’re now working on turning into a real start-up!
“My Aleto experience changed my perspective by showing me other ways to make a positive impact. I learned that you can work in the private sector, take care of yourself and your family, and still give back to your community, which is crucial.”
We want people like Munira to know that their backgrounds don't have to hinder their future. And the more people like Munira, the more we can propel them into great careers.
And the more diverse future leaders we'll create.
Young people from poorer and ethnic minority backgrounds in the UK don’t have the same chance to excel in the workplace.
12.4% of the working population are ethnic minorities, but only 8.4% of managers and 5% of senior managers are. And people from working-class backgrounds earn 17% less than more privileged colleagues.
Help us change this by donating to our leadership and mentoring programmes. All your money will go directly to funding a young person's leadership training and 9-months of online mentoring.
