Story
As December fast approaches we are reaching out for help to raise the necessary funds to deliver our annual Christmas Project, which we have successfully delivered for the last 20 years.
We usually organise a Christmas lunch in collaboration with St. Paul's School where a festive meal and gift is delivered to over 400 isolated older people. However this year, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, we will not be able to provide our usual level of support.
Covid-19 has had a devastating effect on the older people we support. Most have gone from being active and independent to being isolated in their homes, the effect this is having on their mental health will probably stay with them for a long time. Social distancing has led to a huge and sudden increase in social isolation and loneliness; therefore, we feel that the delivery of this service, during what is seen as the loneliest time of the year, as crucial.
This year Age UK Westminster's staff, helped by a team of wonderful volunteers, will be delivering a luxury hamper and a befriending call to each recipient during the 4 days running up to Christmas.
This Project will benefit Westminster residents aged 60 plus, who live alone and are experiencing social isolation. The majority of our recipients are housebound or have severe mobility problems, which prevent them from visiting their families and engaging with other local Christmas activities.
By donating to this cause you will help Age UK Westminster cover the cost of coordinating the project and providing older people with a luxury hamper and a friendly call on what can be the loneliest day of the year.
Any money raised over the target amount will go towards our loneliness and isolation projects.
Paddy Corbett, Volunteer Project Coordinator, says:
The Christmas Lunch Project is very important to Age UK Westminster, as it provides a real lifeline to older Westminster residents who would otherwise spend their Christmas Day alone. Unfortunately, this project does not receive any regular funding, which means that we must fundraise every year to ensure that we can keep delivering this valuable service.
Thank you for your support.
