Martin’s Story
Martin and his wife Alice were like many retirees, they enjoyed their retirement and sharing trips out. When Alice developed Dementia and their regular trips out and hobbies became harder to undertake, their GP referred them to the Memory Clinic who, having confirmed the Dementia diagnosis, thankfully recommended that they contact 'ADS'.
A visit from an 'ADS' Advisor assisted the couple in accessing financial support to help them manage Alice’s increased care needs and introduced them to the range of services that 'ADS' provides. Soon after, both Martin and Alice began attending our Singing for Pleasure Service. Although Alice was unable to read the words of the song sheets, this didn’t stop her from singing as she was able to remember each song word for word.
Alice and Martin regularly attended 'ADS' services which reduced their isolation and enabled Martin to build lifelong friendships with others from the groups. Sadly, Alice passed away from a non-Dementia related health condition but not before they were able to able to take one final trip away and make beautiful memories.
I felt very supported by 'ADS' and really enjoyed attending the Singing for Pleasure sessions. I am happy Alice and I were able to make memories. My advice to others is to make the best of what you can as everyone with Dementia is different.”
Martin continues to attend ‘ADS’ services as a former carer, especially the Singing for Pleasure sessions. Martin also volunteers at the charity services to help support new carers of People with Dementia by sharing his and Alice's journey.
