Story

"the best of DMU in one person"

The Adam Redfern Memorial Fund has been established to give aspiring students with a flair for media, journalism and sport the opportunity to study at DMU and make the most out of their time here before they go on to fulfil their career ambitions.

The fund is in memory of much-loved DMU colleague, Journalism alumnus and fitness enthusiast, Adam Redfern, who died suddenly of a heart attack while out jogging in March 2021, aged 28.

Donations will enable ambitious students to pursue Adams passions and will help to boost their career opportunities with the support of the university through dedicated scholarships, bursaries and monetary awards.

The Adam Redfern Memorial Fund will also shine a light on SADS (sudden arrhythmic death syndrome) when someone dies suddenly following a cardiac arrest and no obvious cause can be found through fundraising events hosted in Adams memory and also by supporting the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust; a Leicestershire-based charity set up to break the 'silence' on SADS and create a new generation of young life savers.

Described as the best of DMU in one person, Adam Redfern was an integral part of the universitys community for almost a decade. Having arrived in 2011 to study Journalism (BA Hons), it was clear early on how much appetite he had for university life, becoming a member of the mens football team and volunteering for all three strands of Demon Media, the universitys student broadcaster. As he progressed on to his professional career, Adam joined DMUs communications team, helping to improve the profile of DMU Sport and leading creative campaigns to promote Varsity. He also played a vital role in propelling the universitys social media and growing the well-regarded, award-winning presence is has today.

Adam completely embodied all that DMU tries to inspire in students. In his warmth and his friendliness, in his willingness to get involved in something new, in his humour and open-hearted love of meeting new people, and in the way in which he seized on every opportunity he could in his short life.

This fund strives to keep Adams legacy alive by giving others the opportunity to achieve in his memory.

Donations to this fund will allow DMU to provide prizes for students who go above and beyond their studies. The fund will also be used to provide support for DMU Sport and Demon Media, to ensure students who get involved with these groups continue to have the best experience possible. This could include grants to sports clubs, crowdfunding projects, fund volunteering opportunities, workshops and widening participation projects, to name just a few. If sufficient funds are raised the aspiration for the fund is to provide scholarships in Journalism and Sport in Adams name.

However you choose to give, you will be making a real difference to students who are passionate about achieving their full potential in the world of media, journalism and sport. If donating is not possible for you at this time, there are other ways to support the fund. Please share this page with anyone you think would support us on social media, by email, telephone, via word of mouth or on your website.

Thank you for taking the time to find out about the Adam Redfern Memorial Fund.

The perfect legacy created for Adam who spent his life supporting students in achieving their ambitions after he achieved his own so quickly. Love, Alice and Chris - Alice Wilson Chris Smith

So sorry I couldnt be there. Really glad to be able to contribute without being there. I remember Adam from my very first day at DMU Football. He helped to make me feel comfortable at social. He pointed me in the right direction to help me get into the teams at the uni. Adam was one of the most inspirational, most personable and to be honest one of the most genuinely great people Ive ever met. I hope he nah rest in peace and that his legacy results on many more people like Adam having a positive effect on people that go to DMU. I honestly believe that without Adam my uni experience wouldnt have been so incredible and I love him for everything he did for me and the people around me. His death saddened, shocked and left me reflective of people in my life. It isnt very often that I meet people as incredible as Redders and I hope that his legacy continues in his death as Im 100% sure it wouldve done in his life. Lots of love. Conor. - Conor Byrne

Having worked alongside Adam, I thought I knew him pretty well but I have been amazed over this last few months to learn just how many great projects he was involved with, how many people he had helped, what a huge contribution he made to so much at DMU and beyond. I think if we could all be more like Adam, the world would be OK. RIP, pal. - Paul Hindle

Adam is one of the best people I've worked with and was a really good friend. This project is a fitting tribute to him and I'm sure it will be a big success. I'm gutted to be on holiday and not able to make it to the memorial event, but will certainly be having a drink in his memory from afar. - Craig Gundersen
