Story
The Young Middle Magnet School music program needs your help! The school is in need of saxophones, flutes, brass instruments, and percussion to reduce sharing, allow additional students to participate, and replace aged instruments that are beyond repair as seen in the video.
My school is 90% plus free/reduce lunch school. We are a Magnet School, a school of choice. So many of our students ride the bus because they live a far distance from the school. In addition, many students do not have the financial ability to rent monthly instruments. In this aspect, Hillsborough County does allow students to rent an instrument for the entire year at the cost of $43. This can also be hard for some of our students, but we do not have enough instruments to meet the needs of all of the students. In addition, providing rental instruments means a lot of wear and tear and many costly repairs. And because we are limited on instruments, a student may be without an instrument to practice with until the instrument can be repaired. -Mrs. Miller, Band Director
Mrs. Miller shared the story of one student who "found a love for band and is now playing multiple instruments and discovered that he wants to be a musician, composer, conductor, and teacher. He started on Trombone and now in proficient on Trumpet, Tuba, Baritone, Alto Saxophone, Flute, and is learning Snare."
With generous and transformative support from Eddie Van Halen over the years and now continuing through his son Wolfgang, The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is pleased to announce that the Van Halen Family has committed to kickstarting the Adopt A School campaign with a generous $1,000 donation towards each of the first 100 participating schools.
Schools participating in the Adopt A School campaign are qualified through MHOF’s vetting and eligibility process, giving donors confidence that their investment is protected and sustainable, impacting students for a minimum of 10 years (the lifespan of an instrument in a school setting.) Donations made to this school’s fundraising campaign go directly to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation (MHOF). MHOF then purchases the specific instruments the school is in need of at a substantially discounted price and the instruments deliver directly to the school.
Donate today and help these students foster their love of music, every dollar counts!
