Story

"In 2019, Imperial Middle School started the process of reinvigorating a young band program. Starting with just 60 dedicated students, the band was small but brimming with potential. Then came the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many programs faltered. But not Imperial’s band. With perseverance, creativity, and a strong sense of community, the program adapted, using virtual lessons and socially distanced practices to keep the music alive. Despite the obstacles, the band continued to grow, embodying the resilience and spirit of the students.

Fast forward to today, and the program has become a powerhouse, now boasting over 240 students in the band alone—more than four times its original size. The expansion didn’t stop there. Recognizing the hunger for more musical opportunities, the school launched an orchestra program, now flourishing with 34 students eager to master stringed instruments." -Gerardo Carvajal, Band Director

With approximately 71% of the student population enrolled in the music program, the need for new instruments is urgent to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate. Acquiring additional trombones, tubas, euphoniums, trumpets, flutes, bass clarinets, tenor saxophones, violas, and celli would significantly enhance the ability to involve more students in the program.

"The impact of this program extends far beyond music. It has equipped students with skills that transcend the band room, helping them excel academically and personally. The sense of community it has fostered on campus is palpable, with students feeling a deep connection to their peers, their school, and the wider La Habra community.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the program is its outreach to local retirement homes. Students have had the chance to perform for seniors, forging connections that span generations. The awe on a 12-year-old’s face as they listened to the life stories of a 100-year-old man, just after playing a piece for him, is a testament to the power of music to bridge divides and bring people together." -Gerardo Carvajal, Band Director

Schools participating in the Adopt A School campaign are qualified through MHOF’s vetting and eligibility process, giving donors confidence that their investment is protected and sustainable, impacting students for a minimum of 10 years (the lifespan of an instrument in a school setting.) Donations made to this school’s fundraising campaign go directly to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation (MHOF). MHOF then purchases the specific instruments the school is in need of at a substantially discounted price and the instruments deliver directly to the school.

With generous and transformative support from Eddie Van Halen over the years and now continuing through his son Wolfgang, The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is pleased to announce that the Van Halen Family has committed to kickstarting the Adopt A School campaign with a generous $1,000 donation towards each of the first 100 participating schools.

Donate today and help these students foster their love of music, every dollar counts!
