From the very beginning, Aaron’s journey has been different.

Aaron was born six weeks prematurely and spent the first 10 days of his life in Special Care. By six months old, it became clear that he was experiencing developmental delays, as he was unable to lift his head. From that moment, our journey into a world of appointments, assessments and therapies began.

Over the years, Aaron has been supported by a community paediatrician, neurologist, geneticist, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists. Every achievement has been hard-earned and celebrated, but everyday life continues to bring challenges that many families never have to face.

Aaron has diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), sensory processing difficulties, hypotonia, developmental delay, learning difficulties, hypermobility of the joints and reflux difficulties. He also experiences language and communication difficulties and uses self-stimulating behaviours to help regulate himself when the world around him feels overwhelming.

Aaron also has scoliosis and is awaiting surgery. This will bring further challenges for Aaron as he prepares for a major operation and faces a period of recovery and rehabilitation. An assistance dog could provide him with comfort, reassurance and encouragement during this time, while also supporting and prompting him with his occupational therapy and physiotherapy routines as part of his ongoing development.

Aaron’s brother, Aman, also has complex additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, hypotonia, hypermobility of the joints, sensory processing difficulties and GORD. Like Aaron, Aman requires ongoing support and understanding.

As a solo mum, Sonia dedicates every day to ensuring both boys receive the care, support and opportunities they deserve. Supporting two children with complex additional needs means constantly balancing appointments, therapies, routines and their individual emotional needs. There are many times when both boys need 1-to-1 support at the same time, and while Sonia does everything possible to be there for them both, managing their needs alone can be incredibly challenging.

For Aaron, everyday situations that many of us take for granted can feel overwhelming. Busy environments, unfamiliar places and changes to routine can cause anxiety and distress, while communication difficulties can make it hard for him to express how he is feeling or what he needs.

This is why we are fundraising for an assistance dog for Aaron.

An assistance dog would be so much more than a pet. It would become Aaron’s constant companion, providing comfort, reassurance and support. It could help him manage anxiety, feel more secure, build confidence and encourage greater independence.

The bond between Aaron and his assistance dog could provide a unique source of support — a companion who understands his needs and helps him navigate a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming.

We know an assistance dog cannot change Aaron’s diagnoses, but it could change how he experiences life. It could give him confidence, comfort and the opportunity to achieve things that currently feel difficult.

With your support, we hope to give Aaron the chance to be matched with an assistance dog that could transform his daily life and support him on his journey towards greater independence.

Every donation, no matter how small, will bring Aaron one step closer to receiving this life-changing support.

7.5% of all donations to Tree of Hope in relation to this appeal will be allocated to the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope to cover our core operating costs.

If we raise insufficient funds, or surplus funds, then the funds will be used, if appropriate, to fund support for our child’s needs in accordance with Tree of Hope’s charitable objects. If in those circumstances we are unable to use all or part of the funds for the benefit of our child in accordance with Tree of Hope’s charitable objectives, then any funds that cannot be used will be transferred to be used for the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope.
